Set in the centre of the tranquil old hamlet of Les Guibertes, La Maison de Grand-mère is a spacious 250-year-old village house, full of charm and character, with beautiful views of both sides of the Guisane valley. We have recently fully renovated it and have kept many of the original features, including the vaulted ceilings, the original wooden floors, and much of the original furniture. Old doors, lights and other fixtures help maintain the special character of the house.

The six big double bedrooms on three floors (four double beds and two sets of single beds), three with en-suite showers and wash basins, an additional shower room with a wash basin, four WCs, one on each floor, and a beautiful bathroom with an updated old wash basin stand that will surprise you, provide comfortable accommodation for up to 12 people.

Each room has mountain views; the view of the valley widens as you go higher up the house. Under the rafters a mezzanine area invites you to relax while reading or contemplating the view. Situated half way between two floors the "chambre à pain" shows how a whole year's supply of bread was stored (the villagers were only allowed to bake bread once a year). Today you can leave your suitcases or other belongings there during your stay. On the ground floor you will find the living and dining room with a wood burning stove, a beautiful large fully equipped kitchen and a separate laundry and drying room. Where there were no original wooden floor boards we have installed underfloor heating so there are few radiators and it is warm throughout even when it's -20C outside!

There is a small garden area available to guests across the grass path from the front door.

Les Guibertes village is still centred on the fine 18th century church, a protected monument. Just behind it is the communal "oven" where each household baked their bread once a year. There is a very good restaurant (the best in the valley) 200 yards from the house, and a farm shop that sells excellent produce - their ewes cheese is renowned and on many local restaurant menus. The beautiful Guisane river flows 70 yards from the house. In summer it is perfect for rafting and kayaking.

At only five minutes by car from the ski lifts at Monêtier, and seven minutes from the lifts at Villeneuve, the village is peaceful yet ideally situated for access to the ski slopes and is just a few yards from the Nordic ski trails along the valley. If the snow cover is good you can ski right back to the house through the forest. If you leave your car in one place and come down later elsewhere, just take the free shuttle bus, which links all the ski lifts and passes less than 200 yards from the house, and return with it to your car.

In the summer the village is the perfect point of departure for walks, hikes, bike rides, river sports or for visiting the region: for example, Briançon and the Mont Dauphin forts are both listed by UNESCO as world heritage sites; there are magnificent valleys – the nearby Upper Nevache valley, or a little further away the valley ‘des Fonds’, to name only two, and all this in an area that boasts 300 sunny days a year.

And in both summer and winter you can enjoy the Grand Baths of Monetier fed by local thermal springs with pools both inside and outside. Enjoy a magnificent view of the Parc des Ecrins as you test the suite of Roman baths (hot, warm and cold), the steam room, the Beauty Spa, or the hot pool outside even when it’s snowing.
